Kattapuram Family History
Welcome to the world of our Ancestors !!!
Through the documentation of Kattappuram family history, we are trying to find out our roots, trace it to the very beginning (as far as research would allow) hoping that this will help us understand the lives, living conditions, traditions, and customs, which were so dear to our great great grandfathers. In this fast-changing world, this history can stand as a reference point for our future generations reassuring the only thing that doesn’t change in their lives are their roots!!
The Kattappuram Family Tree grew to its present stature over the years, decades, and centuries. But with the passing of time and the parting of ways by dear and near ones it became impossible to keep track of the spreading of the Kattappuram Family Tree branches. They spread into new territories and countries the world over. The families and their offspring have migrated to new pastures within Kerala and many other states in India, the Gulf Countries, U.S.A, Canada, Germany, U.K, and other European countries. Luckily before it is too late serious efforts were made by the elders of the Kattappuram Family, prominent among them is Dr. K. O. Oommen (Pic) who took the initiative to gather all possible details from around the world. Many hours of work have been put into the research and documentation of these ancestors. We hope you will benefit from the information we present here.
Varkey Geevarghese and Mariamma
According to the information gathered from elders of the family and through judicial and sub-registry documents, we could trace back to around 2 centuries. Here we start from our known great great grandfather Mr. Varkey Geevarghese who lived around 1843. Mr. Varkey was born in Mepral, Thiruvalla Taluk, Kerala. Later he had settled in Kavumbhagom, Thiruvalla.
We could not trace the details of Mr. Varkey's wife Mariamma, our great great grandmother, from any living member. We only know that she survived her husband and was alive when the property was divided among her children in 1898. We could not even confirm her name as Mariamma! But their only daughter had been named Mariamma. So also their three sons named their first daughter Mariamma. According to religious and social customs prevalent at that time the eldest daughter born to a son was named after his mother.
Mr. Varkey was an advocate hence was popularly called Varghese Vakil. He was doing his practice at Pathanamthitta court but was staying at Thiruvalla. At that time communication and transport facilities were not regular and he was attending to court duties after covering the distance riding on horseback. He was a man of reckoning in Pathanamthitta court. There were extensive pieces of land under his control. The heart of the town at that time was near the present market and was owned by him.
During his time there were strong factions in the church. The reformist movement led by Kovoor Ipe Thoma Kathanar was at the forefront and under his leadership initially, Paliekara Orthodox Church came under his domain. At this juncture, a section of the original parish of which Varghese Vakil was one, left the church and formed themselves into a congregation and Kattappuram Church came into being. 50% of his land in Kavumbhagom was donated for the church by Varghese Vakil and along with others, he was responsible for building the church. Eventually, the church was named after our family name.
